New BUZmob services for mobile users

October 12, 2007

With BUZmob growing in popularity with content publishers, we decided it was time to provide BUZmob end-users with a portfolio of useful mobile solutions, built around BUZmob. The service portfolio can be accessed by typing http://m.buzmob.com/services in your phone’s browser, by accessing “More BUZmob Services” on your Personal Page , or by sending the URL from the web to your phone, by clicking here.

The new services all work in a similar fashion - you can perform a search for information, and then add the search result feed in your Personal Page, and subscribe to the search. When new items match your search criteria, they will show on the saved search feed.

We’ve also added a handy “mobile sign-up” feature, allowing non-BUZmob users to use all the services, and to create their own Personal Page directly from their mobile device.

As always, mobile users can add any feed to their Personal Page by visiting http://buzme.buzmob.com on the web.

Here is a detailed description of the new BUZmob services:

(1) Search for news, blogs and feeds using Blogdigger - Type a search term and read the latest posts. Or you can add the search result feed to your Personal Page, and track new items which match your search criteria.

(2) Access millions of blogs, feeds and social network profiles directly on your mobile. Simply pull up a feed by its name. You can then add the result feed to your Personal Page, and directly access new content posted on the feed.

Supported blog platforms and social networks include:

Blog.com, Blogger, Buzznet, FeedBurner, Fotolog, Livejournal, Live Spaces, Multiply, Skyrock, Tumblr, Vox, WordPress.com and Xanga.

(3) Mobile Job Search - Search for jobs directly from your mobile. Subscribe to search results on your Personal Page, where you can see new job posts which meet your criteria.

Supported job search engines include: Indeed.com (US & Canada), SimplyHired (US), Recruit.net (Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore).

(4) Mobile Classifieds from Vast.com (US only) - search for cars, real estate, and rentals.

(5) US Real Estate Search from Trulia.com - search for real estate, view listings and photos.

(6) Nextag Price Comparison - Compare prices for your favorite items directly from your mobile.

(7) Stock Quotes - define a portfolio of stocks, add it to your Personal Page, and track your performance.

(8) Business News - search for corporate/industry business news, track your favorite companies in your Personal Page.

(9) Mobile Wikipedia and IMDb.

More services are added on an ongoing basis - be sure to revisit the BUZmob Services page on your mobile (you can send the page to your phone by clicking here).

As always, comments are most welcome. If you would like us to mobilize a new service, drop us a line.

Which is why I was happy to come across Prog Fetish - a blog dedicated to progressive rock news and tidbits.  The blog is a member of our publisher network - clicke HERE to subscribe to it on your mobile.

 Prog on!

Let your users know you’ve gone Mobile

July 14, 2007

We always recommend to our content publishers to write/blog about the mobile availability of the content, once they have set themselves up with BUZmob.

This not only lets visitors to the site learn more about the service, but it also ensures that those people who read the content via RSS readers, and are not exposed to the BUZme button, are made aware of the new mobile feature.

Here is a great example of such a post, from The Portland Writer:

“…I’m trying out this new thing called “BUZME” (see the button under my picture).  It allows you to read my RSS feed on your mobile device.  I tried it out on my Treo 700W and it works pretty good.  Feel free to try it out if you’re at all interested.  It doesn’t cost anything…”

Short, descriptive, to the point.

June 27, 2007

Following the successful (and quite popular) release of our toolbar, I’m happy to announce the availability of the BUZme bookmarklet.

Many users don’t like and/or distrust browser toolbars. Now they can add feeds to their Personal Page simply by setting up the bookmarklet on their favorite browser. Once set up, all you have to do is to browse to the content you want added to your Personal Page, and click on the bookmarklet.

More information can be found on the BUZme main page. Enjoy!

Inveslogic mobilizes hundreds of feeds in minutes

May 30, 2007

(you can read the official press release here.)

www.inveslogic.com, a buiness blog portal aggregating articles from top financial and investment blogs, went mobile with BUZmob.  Leveraging its content management system (CMS), Inveslogic was able to mobilize hundreds of RSS feeds in a matter of minutes.

The mobilized feeds include all of its RSS feeds, as well as its tag based feeds.   With tag based feeds, mobile users can now track a topic on their mobile, rather than an individual blog’s feed.

To further optimize the mobile experience, Inveslogic implemented our mobile rendering tags, which assist in adapting web content to mobile devices.

Give it a try - click on any feed or tag of interest, and push it to your phone via the BUZme button.

Really Smart Scientists

May 17, 2007

Scientist Solutions is a world-wide community of scientists and students. While I can’t follow the discussions on their message boards, my wife tells me that her life would have been much easier if she had such a resource available to her when she was working on her M.Sc. in Genetics.

The site is a comprehensive forums system where scientists can discuss items they are researching, obtain the latest news, and, most importantly, communicate with fellow scientists and find answers to problems they are faced with.

And now the site is mobile, using BUZmob technology. Visitors to the site can add its RSS feeds to their Personal Page simply by clicking on the “Mobile Feed” button on the left-hand-side menu. Give it a try!

Here is the complete news release.

Welcome, scientists.

BUZme button added to “AddToAny” service

May 17, 2007

Pat at Add to Any was kind enough to add the BUZme button to their collection of feed readers.  Although we recommend you set up the BUZme button on your blog with some explanatory text, publishers who want to reduce the number of chicklets on their blog would do well to set up the all-encompassing AddToAny chicklet.

When visitors to your blog click on the chicklet, they are presented with a list of services they can add your blog’s feed to.  These include just about every major (and minor) RSS reader out there, including the BUZme button.

Thanks, Pat :)

Some Bryght Ideas

May 16, 2007

Roland Tanglao, of Bryght fame, wrote a very positive review of BUZmob.   Thank you Roland!

In his post Roland made some comments I thought are worthy to be addressed in a separate post, for all to see.

As a reminder, BUZmob is really two services in one - a publisher service (http://www.buzmob.com), where bloggers and content owners can mobilize their feed-based content, and distribute it to mobile users via the BUZme button; and a mobile end-user service (http://buzme.buzmob.com), where users can create mobile bookmarks of their favorite feeds and then access feeds and their underlying content on their devices.

Roland’s first question is:

…will it work on any WiFi device? It works great on my Nokia N800. Will it work on other mobile devices like a Sony Playstation PSP or Nintento DS? My guess is yes!

Answer:  There is no reason why it should not work.  However, the content may be less optimized for these devices, because we may not be able to obtain all the information we get (in real time) for the mobile phone: memory capacity, screen size, screen resolution, color depth, etc.  Also, the first interaction with BUZmob, for mobile users, is via a text message, which contains their personal mobile page’s URL.  If the user then plugs this URL in another device, it will work, but in order to get the URL in the first place, they must receive the text message.  This is done for security purposes.

The second question is:

please have an automatic ‘mark as read’ (don’t need checkboxes but why show me something that I’ve already read?).

Answer:  This is on the roadmap.  BUZmob is designed to appeal to both experienced and novice mobile-Internet users.  Many mobile users find it difficult to deal with username/passwords on their device, especially the non-smartphone users.

With that in mind, BUZmob is essentially a subscriptionless service for the end user.  While this drives adoption in the mass market, and increases uptake, it makes it more of a challenge to deliver personalized features to the handset.  With that in mind, we do plan on displaying read/unread/number of unread messages indicators on the mobile device in the near future.

Once again, thank you Roland for your kind comments.  We encourage all of our publishers and end users to send us comments and suggestions - BUZmob is all about you.

MovieSet.com first to Mobilize Content using BUZmob

May 16, 2007

I’m happy to announce our first media site partner - www.movieset.com

Vancouver, Canada, May 16, 2007 – Contec Innovations Inc. (TSX-V: BUZ), a provider of mobile infrastructure software, today announced MovieSet.com as the first Internet portal to mobilize their content using BUZmob™, Contec’s new mobile publishing service.

BUZmob, now in beta release, allows content publishers such as MovieSet™, to enable mobile access to their feed-based content on any mobile device, on any mobile network, anywhere.  Furthermore, BUZmob does not require users to install anything on their mobile device, as content is adapted in real-time to the user’s phone.

“We’re excited about using BUZmob to add mobile elements to our Web presence,” says Colleen Nystedt, President & CEO, MovieSet™.  “Starting with MovieSet’s blog, we can reach film buffs and industry people alike with on-the-go access to the latest developments in the industry.”

MovieSet™ is about creating the ultimate movie experience, giving movie fans access to content they’ve never been able to see before.  In MovieSet’s blog, Movie Marketing, Improved, MovieSet’s online marketing director shares his perspectives on films and marketing (and naturally, film marketing) as well as engaging people that are interested in what MovieSet™ is doing.  Movie trailers, videos of celebrity interviews and other movie news can all be accessed through MovieSet’s blog.  MovieSet™ has been recognized as one of Canada’s new media leaders.  MovieSet™ is one of three finalists for the “Most Promising New Company of the Year” category of the Canadian New Media Awards to be held May 28th in Toronto, Canada.

 “Don Lay”, CEO

About MovieSet™MovieSet™ is a new and unique Internet portal that provides the movie fan with true “behind-the-scenes” access to the filmmaking experience. It’s like watching the DVD “making of” extras – only in real time on the Web. For each film featured on MovieSet™, turnkey technology enables that film’s producer to create a Web presence for their production, allowing fans to track the film’s progress from green light through to delivery. MovieSet™ creates social networks where movie buffs can engage in their passion for films and delivers key demographics to advertisers online. For more information, visit www.movieset.com.

Movie Marketing, Mobile

May 16, 2007

Our friends at MovieSet have just announced the mobilization of their blogs using BUZmob.

This is a very exciting “first” for us - our first media content publisher, focused on movie marketing.  For a marketing-oriented media site going mobile means extending the reach of your content.  It also adds stickiness and differentiation.

Using BUZmob, MovieSet were able to mobilize their website in a self-service process (effectively less than 10 minutes).  I’ve had the pleasure of accompanying the MovieSet team during the planning and implementation process, and I’d like to thank them for the input they had provided us with, some of which has already made its way to the beta launch.

We recommend to our publishers to announce the implementation of BUZmob and the mobilization of their content, preferably as a post on their RSS feed.  By doing so you are guaranteed that all your readers know about the new mobile features and where to find them, even those readers who only subscribe to your RSS feeds.
